Editor

My role as editor was the last day of News Week. My main worry about being editor was story content and morale of the group. As I was the last day of news week, I knew that a lot of stories I had come up with were going to be used on the two news days before mine. I also knew that the group would be tired from two previous news days. One way I thought might bring up morale was getting everyone to wear Christmas jumpers. When I was distributing the stories I also thanked the group for their hard work so far that week.

The day brought me a few challenges but I enjoyed it so much. My Deputy editor was Charlotte Mednick and I had a great editorial team. However, one issue I did find was that I didn’t have much support from my deputy – through no fault of her own. She was placed on a separate video project so was unable to help me in the way that I wanted. Prior to this role I thought that the role would be manageable without the assistance of the deputy, but after I realised this wasn’t the case.

Team Management
This role tested my team management skills. I was in charge of all of the journalists and bulletins. I had been in charge of a few other journalists on stories, but had not been in charge lie this before. My role as deputy editor the day before was my first time on the editorial team, so I really hadn't had much experience of leading a vast amount of people. I do feel though as if I handled managing the journalists and other editors well. Nothing was horribly unorganised and the day as a whole ran smoothly.

Confidence

One thing I discovered on this day was how much my confidence has grown over the past few years. If in first year I realised I would be an editor of news day, standing up in front of everyone telling them that stories that had to work on I would have panicked. I used to hate talking in front of a group or being in charge of anything. However, that part of the role didn’t faze me. I also did a short video for the social media outlets that I was more than happy to do. Previously I would hate the idea of presenting on video.
